All building users should ensure that you read and understand the building Fire Action Plan.
The fire alarm is an audio as well as visual alarm. In the event of a fire, a loud siren will be activated as well as flashing fire alarm points in the roof throughout the building.
Follow the fire signs to the nearest fire escape, bearing in mind the nearest exit might not be the one you came in. Please take note of the nearest exit when working in the building.
Make your way to the fire assembly point that is located on Potterrow at its junction with Marshall Lane.
Fire Stewards and Fire Coordinators should be present in the building Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. If there are no fire stewards available, please call University Security to confirm when it is safe to return to the building.
In the event of a fire alarm, lifts should not be used. There are fire refuge points on every floor for anyone who is unable to use the stairs in an evacuation. Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm the intercom in the refuge points can be used to summon assistance. Outside of these times, you should call University Security who can assist you. Please ensure you are familiar with the location of refuge points throughout the building.
For further information on fire safety, including the management of lithium batteries, please ensure you are familiar with University guidance General fire guidance.
You may require a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). Further information and guidance can be found at Assisted Evacuation or contact our reception team who can advise.
Event organisers are responsible for ensuring event attendees are provided with information relating to the University's Assisted Evacuation Procedures. If you require assistance, please contact our events team.
A fire alarm test takes place every Thursday at 11.30am. During the test, there is no requirement to exit the building.
Every 4 weeks a fire curtain will descend on the 5th floor landing and temporally restrict access to and from the 5th floor landing via one set of stairs.
A fire drill will take place at least once a year and building users are expected to exit the building as if it were a real fire. This is an essential requirement designed to test and review the systems in place.
There may be extreme situations where Bayes Centre will need to close at short notice. Reasons could include loss of power and/or heating, flooding or adverse weather.
In these situations, a member of the Bayes team will inform everyone in the building of the need to evacuate and you should leave the building immediately. We will endeavour to circulate information on any closure to all Bayes users as quickly as is possible.
First Aid kits are available on each level of the building placed on the wall outside of the kitchen beside the sitting area. Please report any injuries or incidents to our reception team.
There is a defibrillator and a first aid kit available at reception. There are first aid trained members of staff available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, please contact reception if needed.
Building users should ensure they work in a safe manner for the safety of themselves and others. If anyone is found to be working in an unsafe manner, they will be asked to leave the building. Building users can seek support by emailing our reception team.
