Our History

Thomas Bayes, a young student of logic and theology, comes to Edinburgh. His later work on probability – now known as Bayes’ Theorem – helps form the foundations of modern statistics, data science and AI.

The Beginning

2011–2017

Planning for regional investment

Plans begin for a new partnership across local councils, universities and governments to invest in jobs, skills and innovation in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas.

August 2018

City Region Deal signed

The Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal is agreed. This £1.3 billion programme supports the region’s growth.

The University of Edinburgh plays a key role through its Data-Driven Innovation (DDI) programme, with the Bayes Centre becoming the home for work in data science and artificial intelligence (AI).

Bayes Centre officially opens

The Bayes Centre opens its doors on the University’s central campus.

Named after Thomas Bayes, it brings together researchers, students and partners from industry and the public sector. The building was opened by HRH The Princess Royal and designed by Bennetts Associates to encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas.

Architectural award

The Bayes Centre wins a 'Large Project' Award from the Edinburgh Architectural Association for its open, welcoming design.

Growing collaboration and innovation

The Bayes Centre supports a wide range of research and innovation projects in areas such as:

The Bayes Centre continues to be central to Edinburgh’s data innovation community.

A new Executive Education course is now live, designed to help senior leaders harness the power of AI within their organisations. This flexible programme provides the insight and tools needed to navigate rapid change and drive strategic transformation.

The Bayes Centre supported the course’s development with initial seed funding, reinforcing our commitment to shaping innovation across sectors.
