Safety guidance for working outside normal hours at Bayes Centre.
Out of Hours Safety Guidance | Bayes Centre

Overview

The Bayes Centre encourages a healthy work-life balance. Standard  working hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Out-of-hours work at the Bayes Centre is weekdays from 7am to 9am, 5pm to 10pm, and Saturdays from 7am to 10pm. The building is closed outside of this.

Lone Working Guidance

Lone working is defined as working where no one else has an awareness of your presence in the building. It is the responsibility of the building user to ensure there are suitable and personal safeguards in place when working on their own while in the building.

If you know you are working on your own or find yourself working alone, follow these steps:

  • Notify security with your name, building, and room. Optionally, inform someone of your whereabouts, ensuring they have security's contact details.
  • Call security to inform them when you leave.
  • Take extra caution when exiting, lock doors and prevent unauthorised entry. Do not confront intruders.
  • For emergencies, contact security.

Security may verify identities of anyone in the building outside normal hours.

Fire Emergency Guidelines

  • Raise the Alarm: Activate the nearest Break Glass Point to start the building's fire alarms and notify University Security.
  • Contact Security: If possible, call University Security to provide details about the fire's location.
  • Evacuate: Leave the building immediately via the nearest Fire Exit, following the green directional signs.
  • Assembly Point: Once outside, proceed to the fire assembly point at the junction of Potterrow and Marshal St, and report to security and the fire service.
  • Building Issues: For emergencies like power loss or flooding, contact University Security.
  • No Fire Coordinator Out of Hours: Users must self-evacuate and report as there are no designated fire coordinators or stewards after hours.
  • First Aid: Typically, no first aiders are available out of hours; make suitable arrangements in advance.

Be familiar with all fire action notices throughout the building.

General Guidance

  • Prohibited Activities: Work that risks serious injury or fire when alone is not allowed.
  • Children: Children are not permitted in the building out of hours unless part of an organised Bayes event and closely supervised at all times.
  • Pets: Dogs and other pets are not permitted in University buildings, except assistance dogs.
  • Smoking: Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited within University buildings and near entrance doorways.

Security Guidance

  • Tailgating: Do not allow others to follow you through doors when entering or exiting the building out of hours; ensure doors close securely behind you.
  • Security Patrols: University Security patrols the Bayes Centre after hours. Officers wear red jackets and ID badges displaying University and security branding.
  • ID Verification: Security may request ID and inquire about the presence of individuals in the building out of hours. Unauthorised individuals will be asked to leave, and further actions may be taken if necessary.
  • Assistance: If you feel vulnerable or require urgent building or security assistance, contact security at any time
